Shoulda stayed home and listened to her albums
Let's face it: she is an incredible pianist, draws us in with her sultry voice, has immense talent, and who in the world doesn't think she is an amazing beauty on top of all of that? Having seen TVBOO in person at Chateau St. Michelle and three times previously in LA, we were excited to see her again.
The opening group came on at 7, played some riffs that seemed more for themselves than the audience, disappeared at 7:30 with hardly anyone noticing, and we all sat until 8:00 with the energy sapping out of the crowd. It was an evening without energy, however. When TVBOO finally appeared, he first number was upbeat, but then the show seemed to fall flat without a theme or motive, just her great voice but less than great banter. We all think her hubbie is great, personally admire her for her apparent love of having twin 2 1/2 year old boys, but what she had to say after the first few sentences was not unique, funny, or helped in building the show.
As surprising, there was a stream of people doing the same thing. It was unusual for us to leave a Chateau St. Michelle concert before the last note floats past us and dissipates into the summer skies, but by 9 we had picked up our blankets, packed our basket and even took our half-empty bottle home with us.
Perhaps the lack of energy of the evening was because she had little left. What we learned from her commentary interspersed among the songs was that she had been on the road for a long time, would soon be back home in Vancouver at the end of the summer touring for what is no doubt a long-needed rest. Still, we did not pay on a sliding scale based on how fatigued she might be, and if we would have wanted a quiet night, we would have stayed at home (since our son was at a sleepover) and listened to one of her albums.
